KITSCOTY AWARDS NIGHT: CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Friday, September 11, 2015 was a  night to celebrate the successes and achievements of our students at KHS.  This year, the format was changed to recognize each student individually. We added medals to be given to the students with the highest average in each course to the traditional certificates, keeper plaques, small trophies, Home Ec. aprons and annuals. Honor pins were also given to those students who achieved an average of 80% or more.

We wish to express our greatest appreciation to the donors of awards and scholarships, as well as the presenters who came out to support our awards night. We had 130 students and over 250 awards handed out.  Congratulations to all and we are proud of our students of KHS!!

Fine Arts Celebrated!

The past two weeks have been a busy time for the fine arts at KHS.  Last week was "Celebrate the Arts" featuring the Drama club's "The Girl with the Golden Locks," Foods 20/30's decadent desserts at intermission, CTS and Art courses' visual displays of projects, and intermission music by the Sr. Band students.  The students worked very hard to prepare for this event and as a result it was highly entertaining.

Tuesday night was the Spring Concert for the music students of KHS.  Highlights included Star Wars, Rolling in the Deep, Eye of the Tiger (with guest performer Mrs. Cey), Radioactive, Best Day of My Life, and of course the Gr. 7 right of passage: Power Rock!  The grande finale had all 123 music students on stage performing Happy by Pharrell.  It was a smashing success!

School's Out For Summer! Well, Almost!

Even though another school year draws to a close, there is still so much happening at KHS! It's hard to believe that it's already June and we'll be soon getting ready for final exams and report cards! This year had a lot to offer - from guest speakers to house league games and challenges, to Cavalier Conference days and sporting tournaments galore! This year was definitely one for the books. 

Here are some highlights for the week:

The senior high track season came to another successful end.  Personal bests were achieved at the district meet.  That outstanding performance sent 7 athletes to zones in Fort MacMurray (where they competed last week).  Competing in zones was: Chelsey Gaboury, Jordan Buchanan, Jolene Corrigal, Conor Fogarty, Kyran Heinitz, Ryder Budden, Jaiden Peever.  Congratulations on representing the Cavaliers and doing us proud! 

Tomorrow is our own track meet here at KHS! Feel free to come cheer on our students as they challenge each other and themselves! At the end of the day it's all about the relay races and this year sees our Cavalier students taking on our Cavalier teachers! What an epic race that will be! KHS happenings

Activities at our school continue to occur at a steady pace! Academics are a high priority as we set our sights on final exams in just over a month’s time. The top priority of this week is our High School Graduation which takes place Saturday, May 9th. Graduation Exercises for our 36 Graduates begins at 3:00pm in the gymnasium. This day will honor a significant milestone in the Educational accomplishments of these young ladies and gentlemen!

Monday of this week will see our students take part in Student Vote Day – setting the stage for Tuesday’s actual provincial election.

Tuesday evening will also be a grade 9 parent meeting. Information will be shared in regards to program alternatives & selection requirements for grade 9’s entering into High School (grade 10).

Speaking of grade 10’s, they will be travelling to TRY-A-TRADE on Wednesday for an informational day of career opportunities.

Additionally throughout this week our Track & Field athletes will continue to hone their skills for upcoming track competitions. As one can see, the action, both Academically and Extra-curricular wise, is certainly broad & Exciting!

Athletics!

 Kitscoty Junior Senior High has just recently completed another very successful badminton season. The junior high team consisting of 50 athletes competed in ten separate tournaments, four of which we hosted. The overall results were very impressive with the team regularly advancing to the play-offs and winning numerous medals. The season's success culminated with the team winning the BTRD North Championship banner and placing second in the overall BTRD championship.
 The senior high team consisted of a much smaller number of athletes but they too represented KHS extremely well.In the three tournaments the team attended the our athletes advanced to 9 of the possible 14 play-off spots and brought home 6 medals.The season ended with three of our team members competing at the Zone Championships where Kenny Lord was a quarter finalist and the team of Dallas Hines and Ashton Oakes won the bronze medal.
 Congratulations to all the athletes who helped make our program so strong and successful.

Music Travels...

Over Easter Break 10 Sr. High Music students from KHS got together with students from WHS, Irma, and Provost to form an Honour Band that travelled to Ireland for 9 days.

Sights they visited included places such as St. Patrick's Cathedral, Trinity College, The Ring of Kerry, The Cliffs of Moher, Kilarney National Park, the National Stud Farm, and Blarney Castle.  The band also performed 4 times in places such as the Matchmaker Hotel in Lisdoonvarna, The Bog Museum, Bunratty Castle, and at Blarney Castle (shown above).

While KHS shared a bit about Canada, they were able to soak in Irish traditions, history, culture, food, and of course music and dance!

This was the 5th International Trip for KHS and the BTPS Honour Band.  They occur every two years, so keep an eye out for the upcoming 2017 trip!

Success in Career and Technology Studies

Another busy year in the CTS lab. . . . . .  things are happening! Student continue to exhibit amazing skill and creativity in manufacturing projects from passive speakers, centrepieces, boxes, shields, wooded mugs, dye sublimated projects (mugs, tote bags, licence plates, mouse pads, bookmarks), mirrors, pop can caddies and book ends.

The list goes on!  

I'm proud of what we can achieve in our lab - students make it successful!

Senior High Girls Strike Gold

The Senior High Girls Curling team travelled to Vegreville for Zone Curling Finals February 20-21.  After a couple of close games on day 1, the girls managed to get into a tie breaking situation on day 2 to keep themselves in the running for the banner.  Then on day 2, they came out hot, winning back to back tie breakers to clinch a spot in the semi-final game.  They took the semi-final to an extra end and skip Chelsey Gaboury made a high pressure final shot to win the game.  Stepping right back onto the ice, they dominated the final game coming home with a 8-4 victory and the Zone Championship Title.  The girls will now advance to Provincials coming up March 5-7 in Lloydminster.  Come out and cheer them on!

French 30 - Travel and Tourism Project

Late in Semester One, the French 30 class did a Travel and Tourism project where they had to research a Francophone country in the world and create a Travel Brochure, Bumper Sticker, Poster find a song from the country. The most exciting part of the project is that they had to find a recipe that originated in the country and make the food item to share with the class. This year the following countries were represented: Togo (Austin), Switzerland (Marti), Congo (Chandler), France (Matt), Luxembourg (Raylene), Morocco (Kaitlyn), Chad (Kenny), St. Martin (Harleigh), Louisiana (Will), Belguim (Spencer).

Winter Walk Day!

On February 4, the entire school went for a walk around the community to enjoy the beautiful, but frosty, winter weather and each other’s company.  There were prizes handed out along the way and we were grateful for hot chocolate upon our return!  Thanks to the community members who walked with us!

Collaboration...oh the possibilities!

When you hear the word COLLABORATION, what comes to mind? To me it means working together to find a solution to a problem while having the ability to bounce your ideas off of others to come up with the best possible solution! We have been working on this in Social Studies at Kitscoty High School. Students have had daily access to Chromebook computers and using technology, collaboration and teacher guidance students are continually asked questions in which they need to collaborate to find solutions. By allowing students the liberty to work with each other using Google Docs, which are editable from multiple computers by different users at the same time, by having access to Google hangouts which is a live chat amongst classmates and teachers, accessible from home around the clock and by using Google Classroom which is an online classroom where students can access all notes, assignments and projects in one place anywhere in the world, collaboration has become so easy. But it really is more than that. Collaboration is the way of the future. In a world where we can "Google" pretty much anything we need to know, collaboration allows us to dig deeper, to problem solve and to come to conclusions by hearing many perspectives and challenging those perspectives. Collaboration teaches us not what to think, but how to think. It allows the varying talents of each member in the group to be showcased, and that, to me, is what education is all about! - Mrs. Harty-Blank

Good eats and sweet treats...Foods 10 dress to impress!

Over the course of Semester 1, Foods Studies 10 students have been preparing many great meals and hosting events. They have been responsible for preparing the food for our daily hot lunches in our servery and have learned techniques that will hopefully stick with the as they head toward independence. Last week, as the course wrapped up they were responsible for hosting two Heritage meals which featured menus reflecting the cultural backgrounds of group members. They were also challenged to a "Black Box Challenge" in which they were put in groups and had to use mystery ingredients to create tasty and well presented main dishes in the 50 minute time allotted. The judges had a very tough decision as the outcome was phenomenal. Great work this semester Foods 10 students!  

KHS's senior high students finished semester one classes January 22nd and they are now writing final exams.  All junior high students are continuing with regularly scheduled classes; writing midterm exams during class time.  

Remember junior high students, if you were away from class during a scheduled midterm you need to be at school on January 29th to write; please make arrangements with your teacher!  Let's start semester two all caught up on our school work!

In our gym during noon hours we run intramurals for all our students.  The senior highs just finished belly baseball.  The junior highs will be finishing round robin play next week!  All students are continued to be encouraged to sign up to PLAY at noon hours!  Starting in February will be floor hockey!  Lots of opportunities for our students to play and be active!  

If any KHS student is looking for more reasons to get moving then look no farther than our Fit Centre.  We have excellent equipment and many knowledgeable staff members who would love to help all students get started on a personal fitness plan! The Fit Centre is open in the mornings, noon hour and after school; all you need is a water bottle, inside gym shoes and proper gym change!

A day on the ski hill...

Each year KHS attends a School Ski Trip to Table Mountain for a day of skiing or snowboarding.
We will be hitting the hill on March 18th, 2015.  All students are strongly encouraged to attend this field trip.  Whether you are an experienced snow bunny, or just wanting to learn, there is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy their time!  Rentals are available for those that do not have their own equipment.

A newsletter will be sent out later this week with all students.  Included in that letter are more details about the trip, payment forms, and Waiver Forms.
