Late last week, the grade 12 students in our Biology 30 class were learning about DNA replication and Okazaki fragments. They built DNA models first so as to have a better understanding of the structure and shape of the molecule.
These DNA models were built with jujubes, fuzzy peaches, cherry nibs and toothpicks - now doesn't that make Okazaki fragments much more palatable? Yummy, hands-on science!

Amazing artists show their talent at the Mental Health Art Gala
Three Kitscoty High School students entered artwork in the 2nd Annual Mental Health Art Contest this year. In a total of 174 entries, all three Kitscoty students placed in the top ten of their category. Shaelynn Tabish, grade eight, placed fourth in the grade 7-9 category. Erin Prodgers, grade twelve, placed in the top ten in the grade 10-12 category. Sharlie Sjoquist, grade eleven, placed first in the grade 10-12 category and was described as the ‘top winner of the whole contest’ for this accomplishment. She won a prize of $300.00 for her picture.
All three girls attended the Art Gala on May 7th in Vermilion to see the results and take part in activities to celebrate mental wellness.
The pictures are now owned by VIBE and any in the top five of a category will be part of an auction in the near future to raise money for this non-profit organization. Kitscoty High School is very proud of these girls! We look forward to supporting VIBE and mental wellness with more entries in the future.
Canadians Womens Hockey
Kennedy King's grade 7 class was given an assignment to learn more about something they’re interested in or passionate about. The class was given 80 minutes every Monday for 8 weeks to work on their projects. Every topic varied; from the Mars One mission to how the human eye works to explaining the cow's digestive system.
As part of her Genius Hour project, Kennedy King chose to learn more about women's history in hockey and invited Loretta Normandeau, hockey administrator and Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, to speak to the students about her involvement in women's hockey over the course of the years. Loretta has been a hockey administrator for 25 years and helped jumpstart women's hockey in Alberta. She has coached many recognizable names, including Hayley Wickenheiser, two-time Olympic gold medal winner.
Loretta spoke to the student body on May 5th, at an assembly in the gym, where she shared her magnificent story. Check out our story on NewCap news:
